The building was originally owned by the family Lanfranchi, but suffered significant architectural changes by Alexander Gherardesca. In 1821-22 it housed Lord Byron and his circle of friends, at a time when Pisa was called the "paradise of exiles". The archive contains many documents of the medieval history of Pisa, privileges and recognition by the various popes and emperors. It also preserved the Statutes of the Trades, documents of communal life until 1865, those relating to the most important families of Pisa and the Knights of St. Stephen.

We spent one night at this hotel before moving to Florence and we were very satisfied. The location is excellent, 5 minutes walk from the Leaning Tower and near the train station and airport. Our double room (the 107) overlooking the courtyard garden was lovely and well kept immersed in the tranquility. The entire hotel is fitted with a beautiful style and contemporary decor and breakfast room is pleasant. We have served a good continental breakfast and great coffee. Will definitely return!
